In May of 1847, 87 men, women and children left Missouri seeking new opportunities in California. In desperity, the Donner party decided to take a newly advertised route called 'Hastings Cutoff" to save time. Their first obstacle was making their way through the forest where the men had to chop down the trees to make a path that took them 20 days to go 31 miles. When finally exiting the forest, they found themselves staring down the Great Salt Lake Dessert in which they suffered in many ways. Feeling as though their journey was almost to an end, they became trapped near the summit of the Sierra Mountains where they faces the coldest winter on record. In the end, after many hardships, the journey came to an end when relief parties came to rescue the last remaining survivors.
